July 4th, 2026. It's a holiday and you can feel it in the air here.
I'm Cody N Smith, sitting on the porch while the afternoon is still hot, watching the light start to slip. Getting dark soon. My wife Abby J Smith is right here with me, laughing at something on her phone, and our son Hudson N Smith is with me too, already asking for the tenth time when we can light the first one. The mini Goldendoodles are curled at our feet, ears up every time a pop goes off down the road, then right back to napping like they own the place.
The sky is going to light up tonight. That's the promise of the Fourth. Already the sounds are echoing outside all around us, over and over, rolling through the trees and across the fields. They sound like bombs and mortar artillery shells going off, that deep thump in your chest before the crackle spreads out. It's not war. It's us having fun.
Drive through any district today and you'll see the fancy tents, red white and blue tarps flapping, tables stacked with ammunition and gun powder that you can light for amusement. Boxes of roman candles, mortars, fountains, everything a kid dreams about and a dad pretends he doesn't want more than the kid.
How great it is to be an American citizen today on this 4th, 2026. How great it is to celebrate today with my fellow Americans, neighbors grilling, flags out, strangers waving from trucks like they've known you forever.
So I officially label this day, with the power invested in me; my name; Cody N Smith; The Official United States Of America 4th of July Holiday 2026.
Everyone have fun tonight. If you have been celebrating already. Glorious. Amen.
Continue into the night with the sounds of the lights and smoke today. Hudson's got the lighter, Abby's got the camera ready, the doodles are on alert, and I'm right here for every boom.
