The Earth's ozone layer is one of the planet's most important natural defenses. Located high in the stratosphere, this thin layer of ozone gas absorbs much of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV-B and UV-C) radiation before it reaches the Earth's surface. Without it, life on Earth would face dramatically higher rates of skin cancer, cataracts, weakened immune systems, crop damage, and harm to marine ecosystems.
